Standing tumbling classes

Standing tumbling is any pass that starts from a stationary position with no run or round-off entry. At The Stingray Allstars Fort Lauderdale in Deerfield Beach, standing tumbling classes focus on the explosive power and precise technique needed to jump backward into skills from a standstill, which is one of the most valued and heavily scored skill sets in competitive cheer.

What is standing tumbling?

Standing tumbling means the athlete generates all the power themselves, from a still position, without the momentum of a run or a round-off. It is harder than running tumbling of the same skill because there is no built-up speed to carry the athlete through the rotation.

In all-star cheer, standing tumbling is scored on the competition mat and often performed in sync with a full team. Strong, clean standing skills can meaningfully raise a routine's score, which is why athletes train them so deliberately.

  • Standing back handspring from a stationary jump
  • Standing back handspring series (two or more connected)
  • Standing tucks for advanced athletes
  • Jump-to-tumbling connections used in team routines

How do you build a strong standing back handspring?

The standing back handspring is the foundation of standing tumbling, and it is built through the sit-and-set. Coaches teach the athlete to sit their weight back like sitting in a chair, then drive their arms up and set the shoulders, so the jump goes up and back rather than just down.

Athletes drill this with a coach spotting and often over a mat or barrel before connecting it independently. Once a single is powerful and consistent, coaches add a second handspring to build a series, which requires even more rebound and tighter timing.

Why train standing tumbling with a coach?

Standing skills are learned in a progression with trained coaches and proper spotting, never self-taught. Because the athlete throws the skill from a standstill, a weak or mistimed set puts extra load on the wrists, shoulders, and neck. A coach corrects the sit, the arm swing, and the head position so the power goes in a safe direction.

Coaches also build the specific strength standing tumbling demands, since jumping backward with control takes explosive legs and a tight core. That targeted training is what gives Broward County cheer athletes reliable standing passes when it counts on the competition floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is standing tumbling harder than running tumbling?

For the same skill, yes. Standing tumbling has no run or round-off to build momentum, so the athlete must generate all the power from a standstill. That is why it is trained as its own focused skill set.

Does my athlete need a running back handspring first?

Not necessarily. Many athletes develop standing and running handsprings in parallel. A coach will assess your athlete's fundamentals and build the right progression. Call (954) 988-0488 to arrange an evaluation.

Why does standing tumbling matter for cheer scores?

Standing tumbling is a scored category in all-star cheer and is often performed in sync by the whole team. Clean, connected standing skills can raise a routine's difficulty and execution scores.
